How to Play a VCD
on your Mac computer, Windows computer or DVD Player

Macintosh Computer

To play a VCD on Mac, you can use one of the following players. Whether an XVCD will play on Mac OS depends on the XVCD. If it doesn't play, try another player.

  • Apple's Quicktime Player
(note: Quicktime Player plays VCD on Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X 10.3 or later)
How to Play a VCD using QuickTime Player (Mac)

QuickTime Player will play a Video CD (VCD), but doesn't recognize the VCD format, so it will not find the video files on the disk and play them in order. You have to find each of the videos files for it and then open them.

To play a VCD with QuickTime Player:

  • Launch QuickTime Player.
  • Insert the VCD in the CD Drive.
  • From the menu bar, open the MPEGAV folder on the VCD you want to play (File>Open File>"Video CD" Name>MPEGAV
  • Select the first file and click the "Open" button. On the Player window, click the play button (>).
  • Adjust the screen size. For full screen playback, upgrade to QuickTime Player Pro ($29.99).
  • When QTP has played the file, open the MPEGAV folder again, open the next file and click the play button. Repeat this step until you have played the entire movie.
How to Play a VCD using MacVCD Video Player (Mac)

MacVCD video Player will play Video CD (VCD), and it recognizes the VCD format, so it will find the video files on the disk, chain them together and play them.

To play a VCD with MacVCD Video Player:

  • Launch MacVCD X (Mac OS X) or MacVCD (Mac OS 8 / 9).
  • Insert a VCD in to the CD drive. It will play automatically.
  • Adjust the screen size.
  • When it's finished, the VCD will automatically eject. Insert the next VCD.

Windows Computer

To play a VCD on a Windows computer, you can use

  • Apple's QuickTime Player will not play VCD on Windows.

  • Windows Media Player, which is included on most Windows computers or can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web Site.
How to Play a VCD using Windows Media Player (Windows)

A new version of Windows Media Player recognizes the Video CD (VCD) format, finds the video files on the disk and plays them in order. With an older version of Windows Media Player, you have to find each of the videos files for it and then open them.

Using a newer version of Windows Media Player:

  • Launch Windows Media Player.
  • Insert the VCD in to the CD Drive.
  • From the menu bar, select the VCD you want to play.
  • If it doesn't begin playing automatically, press the Play (>) button.
  • Adjust the screen size.

Using an older version of Windows Media Player:

  • Launch Windows Media Player.
  • Insert the VCD.
  • From the menu bar, choose file>open and select the Video CD you want to play.
  • From the menu bar, chosse file>open and open the MPEGAV folder.
  • Select the first file and click the "Open" button. On the Player window, click the play button (>).
  • Adjust the screen size.
  • When WMP has played the file, open the MPEGAV folder again, open the next file and click the play button. Repeat this step until you have played the entire movie.

DVD Player

To Play a VCD, or an XVCD in a DVD player, treat it just like you would a DVD.

Although most new DVD players support VCD, fewer support XVCD. You can check a player's compatibility with these formats at
