How to play WMV on Mac OS X
using MacVCD X

Use this procedure to play a WMV from your computer or from a CD.

  • Windows Media Video (WMV) is a generic name for the set of video technologies developed by Microsoft. ("Windows Media Video," Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia)
  • A WMV file may be named .avi if it is an AVI-contained file, or .wmv or .asf if it is an ASF file
  • Most WMV files may be played on Mac by downloading and installing the Flip4Mac component
  • Encrypted WMV files cannot be played on Mac. These files are downloaded from Video on demand sites (VOD) and require a playback license. Currently, this technology is not supported on the Mac platform.

To Play WMV, you will need:

If you haven't already done so, download and install the Flip4Mac component, and the install the MPlayer component, if required

  • Flip4Mac component
    • To download the Flip4Mac component, go to the Microsoft's Flip4Mac site
    • To install the component, double-click the installer and follow the instructions
  • MPlayer component
    • To use the Integrated MPlayer feature, you must have the MPlayer component installed. The first time you use this feature, MacVCD X will automatically find and install this component for you.

To run MacVCD X, double click the MacVCD X icon.

From the Menu, use File>Open, navigate to the movie file and click the Open button. Click the Play button. For information about controls, refer to the MacVCDX Read Me (pdf)

To play using the integrated MPlayer feature, choose "Open with mplayer" from the file menu (File>Open with mplayer). To stop the movie, press the "Esc" key.



To play WMV on Intel Mac (MacIntel) using MacVCD X on Mac OS X

When playing video formats that require a third party component (e.g. WMV, AVI) on an Intel Mac, the finder may report that it can't find the component or MacVCD X may just not play it. To correct this, follow these instructions:

  • quit from MacVCD X
  • do a Get Info on the MacVCD X program (highlight the MacVCD X icon and press the Apple + I keys)
  • On the Get Info Dialog, check the "Open using Rosetta"



  • Restart MacVCD X
