How to play AVI, DivX, XviD on Mac OS X
using MacVCD X
MacVCD X can play an AVI, DivX or XviD from your computer or from a CD.
- AVI, an acronym for Audio Video Interleave, is a multimedia container format. An AVI file can carry audio/visual data inside in almost any compression scheme, including: MPEG-4, XviD, DivX and others. *
- Most AVIs contain a DivX, and require the DivX component.

If you haven't already done so, install the AVI Quicktime Component, or install the MPlayer component.
- AVI Quicktime Component
- To download the AVI component, go to our Digital Video Resource Page
- To install the component, double-click the installer and follow the instructions
- MPlayer component
- To use the Integrated MPlayer feature, you must have the MPlayer component installed. The first time you use this feature, MacVCD X will automatically find and install this component for you.

To run MacVCD X, double click the MacVCD X icon.

From the Menu, use File>Open, navigate to the movie file and click the Open button. Click the Play button. For information about controls, refer to the MacVCDX Read Me (pdf)

To play using the integrated MPlayer feature, choose "Open with mplayer" from the file menu (File>Open with mplayer). To stop the movie, press the "Esc" key.

To play AVI, DivX, XviD on Intel Mac (MacIntel) using MacVCD X on Mac OS X
When playing video formats that require a third party component (e.g. AVI, DivX, Xvid) on an Intel Mac, the finder may report that it can't find the component or MacVCD X may just not play it. To correct this, follow these instructions:
- quit from MacVCD X
- do a Get Info on the MacVCD X program (highlight the MacVCD X icon and press the Apple + I keys)
- On the Get Info Dialog, check the "Open using Rosetta"

- Restart MacVCD X
