How to Convert and Burn AVI, Divx, Xvid to SVCD
on Mac OS X using iVCD
Use this procedure to make SVCD (Super VCD) from AVI, Divx or Xvid files.
- AVI, an acronym for Audio Video Interleave, is a multimedia container format. An AVI file can carry audio/visual data inside in almost any compression scheme, including: MPEG-4, XviD, DivX and others.
- Most AVIs contain a DivX, and require a quicktime component.
|
|
Requirements
|
|
- iVCD
- source movie(s) in AVI, Divx, Xvid
- to convert from AVI, Divx or Xvid, download and install the required component
- a CD-R or CD-RW
|
|
Instructions
|
| 1. |
If you haven't already done so, download and install the required Quicktime component.
- To download the Quicktime component, go to our Digital Video Resource Page
- To install the component, double-click the installer and follow the instructions
|
| 2. |
Create a new project folder or open an existing one.

- To open an existing project, select "Select Project" and navigate to an existing project.
- To Create a New project,
- Choose the Media Type. To make a SVCD, click the "Super Video CD" radio button.

- From the Project Folder Dialog, select “Create Project”.
Name the new project folder. (we suggest the folder name end with SVCD). The project will be configured using the default settings. (To change the default settings, use the Preferences panel.)
Storing your movie and it's settings in a project folder makes it easy to save your information so you can pick up where you left off, instead of having to finish your project in one sitting, which is often difficult to do at first. It also makes it easy to create more copies of an SVCD once you have perfected your project.
|
| 3. |
Modify the settings.
- If you are going to show the SVCD on a TV, choose the TV Broadcast Standard. There are three TV Broadcast Standards in the world, NTSC, PAL and SECAM.
- If you are going to show the video on a TV in a place in the world that uses the PAL or SECAM (e.g. Europe), choose "PAL".
- Otherwise, choose "NTSC" (North America, Japan). (see notes)

Money Saving Tip: If you are not sure which settings to use, experiment with a DVD-RW/CD-RW until you find settings that produces the best video output. This will save you alot of disks.
|
| 4. |
Drag in your source movie files (.avi, etc.) to the movie list.
To add a movie,
o Click the "Movies" tab
o Using the Finder, find a movie and single-click it to select it
o Drag it to the Movies List
To delete a movie/playlist from the Movie List
o Click the "Movies" tab
o Single-click the movie/playlist to select it
o Click the “Delete” button
As you add movies to the Movie List, pay attention to the Green/Amber/Red indicator bar at the top of the iVCD screen. Try to keep the indicator below the red area to prevent overburning the CD. Once you're more familiar with iVCD, you'll have a better idea of how many minutes you can put on a CD, given the type of video you are burning. For more information, refer to the iVCD Read Me (pdf)

| 5. |
Click the one-step “Convert + Image + Burn” button and Insert a blank CD or CD-RW.

Because converting to MPEG takes a long time, (at least four times as long as the movie length and even longer on slower machines), we suggest you run this job overnight - especially if you are using a G3 machine.
|
| 6. |
Once the burn has completed successfully, test the SVCD on the type of equipment your audience will be using, especially before making multiple copies.
