How to Convert and Burn mov, iMovie and Quicktime movie
to DVD on Mac OS X using iVCD

Use this procedure to make a DVD from mov, iMovie, Quicktime movie

  • When recording with the DVD format, you can get about 120 minutes of video on a DVD and about 240 minutes of video on a dual layer DVD..
  • To author a DVD, you need to convert your video to DVD, create the disk image and burn the DVD. iVCD will do it all for you.
  • Make sure you have at least 5 GB of free disk space since you'll need room to create your DVD work files. If you run out of disk space during the process of making the DVD, you may be able to re-start from the last successful step in the process

Requirements

  • iVCD
  • source movie(s) in iMovie, iMovie HD, Quicktime or .mov format (see iVCD Specs)
  • a DVD-R or DVD-RW

Instructions

1. Create a new project folder or open an existing one.

From the Project Folder Dialog, select “Create Project”.
Name the new project folder. (we suggest the folder name end with DVD). The project will be configured using the default settings. (To change the default settings, use the Preferences panel.)

Storing your movie and it's settings in a project folder makes it easy to save your information so you can pick up where you left off, instead of having to finish your project in one sitting, which is often difficult to do at first. It also makes it easy to create more copies of a DVD once you have perfected your project.

2.

Modify the settings.

  • Choose the Media Type. To make a DVD, click the "DVD" radio button.

  • If you are going to show the DVD on a TV, choose the TV Broadcast Standard. There are three TV Broadcast Standards in the world, NTSC, PAL and SECAM. If you are going to show the video on a TV in a place in the world that uses the PAL or SECAM (e.g. Europe), choose "PAL". Otherwise, choose "NTSC" (North America, Japan). (see notes)

Money Saving Tip: If you are not sure which settings to use, we suggest you experiment with a CDRW until you find a setting that works with your equipment.

3.

Drag in your source movie files (.mov, .avi, etc.) to the movie list.

To add a movie,
o Click the "Movies" tab
o Using the Finder, find a movie and single-click it to select it
o Drag it to the Movies List

To delete a movie/playlist from the Movie List
o Click the "Movies" tab
o Single-click the movie/playlist to select it
o Click the “Delete” button

As you add movies to the Movie List, pay attention to the Green/Amber/Red indicator bar at the top of the iVCD screen. Try to keep the indicator below the red area to prevent overburning the CD. Once you're more familiar with iVCD, you'll have a better idea of how many minutes you can put on a CD, given the type of video you are burning. For more information, refer to the iVCD Read Me (pdf)

4.

Click the one-step “Convert + Image + Burn” button and Insert a blank CD or CDRW.

Because converting to MPEG takes a long time, (at least four times as long as the movie length and even longer on slower machines), we suggest you run this job overnight - especially if you are using a G3 machine.

5.

Once the burn has completed successfully, test the DVD on the type of equipment your audience will be using, especially before making multiple copies.
