1. What are the System Requirements for running To the Trash?
|
|
To run ShredIt you need:
- Macintosh G3+
- Mac OS X ® 10.x
|
2. What's the difference between using To the Trash! and deleting items using the system trash can?
|
Using your system trash can is a two step process, moving the trash to the trash can and emptying it. If you don't empty the trash can, the trash takes up disk space. When you do empty the trash can, the contents are deleted and the disk space it used is freed up.
Many people try to use the trash can as a holding area for files that are not yet ready to be deleted. The problem with doing this is that after a while, you can't remember what should be held on to and what can safely be deleted. Because of this, you become reluctant to empty your trash can, which can really use up disk space over time.
To the Trash! solves this problem for you by letting you specify how long to keep each piece of trash, allowing you to retrieve it if you need it. And, unlike the system trash can, To the Trash! will empty itself each night, deleting each items that is past it's expiry date, but keeping the rest.

3. Where do I find my Registration Key/Serial Number?
|
|
After you have purchased ToTheTrash, you will receive an email that contains your Registration Key/Serial Number. It will either be called a Registration Key or a Serial Number, depending on which Payment Processor you used. It will look like one of the following:
XXX Key: xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx
Serial Number: XXX401-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
If you haven't received an email containing your Registration Key/Serial Number within 24 hours, email us
|
4. Is a Registration Key the same as a Serial Number?
|
|
Yes, a Registration Key is the same as a Serial Number. Different Payment Processors use different terms. Because we use more than one Payment Processor, we have more than one term for the same thing.
|
5. To the Trash! deletes all my trash the next day instead of when I ask it and the "Demo Version" Dialog box is displayed when I use To the Trash. What's wrong?
|
|
Please try the following steps.
- To the Trash! requires a Registration Key/Serial Number before it will work. In the free DEMO mode, it will delete all trash the next day and will display the Demo Version Dialog Box.
For information on buying a key, see:
- If that didn't solve the problem, verify that you have entered the Registration information correctly. (For further information, see the To the Trash! Read Me file)
If you have entered your Registration Key correctly,
- you will be able to specify how long to keep trash before it expires and is deleted
- the
- the Demo Version Dialog Box will not appear the next time you start the program
If you have not yet entered a Registration Key
- the program will delete all trash the next day
- the Demo Version Dialog Box will appear the next time you start the program
If you have not entered your Registration Key correctly,
- an error message will be displayed
- the program will delete all trash the next day
- the Demo Version Dialog Box will appear the next time you start the program
- If that didn't solve the problem, verify that you purchased a Registration Key for To the Trash!. Check the Registration Key email you received from Mireth Technology. It will state what product the key you purchased is for.
Example:
===================
To the Trash Key: xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx
or
To the Trash serial number:
Serial Number: ACDEFG999-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
End of Example:
=============
- If that didn't solve the problem, please download and install a new copy of To the Trash. Sometimes a file is corrupted in transit. To get a new copy

6. Why didn't To the Trash! delete the trash from my system Trash Can?
|
|
To the Trash! does not empty the system trash can. It only manages the trash you have dragged on to the To the Trash! icon.
|
7. Why didn't To the Trash! delete all the expired trash on all my disks?
|
Each time it is run, the Trash Collector will process the To the Trash Storage folder on every mounted disk. If a disk is not mounted when the Trash Collector runs, the storage folder will not be processed. This can occur when you have an external hard drive that is not always mounted. to process these storage folders, follow these instructions:
- Mount the external hard drive.
- Quit the Trash Collector.
- Re-start the Trash Collector manually (Refer to the How to re-start the Trash Collector manually section of this document.)
|
8. What happens if my System Date is incorrect?
|
If the date on your computer is not correct, or you change it, items may be deleted sooner than or later than configured.
e.g. If you change the System Date to 17 July 1970, items scheduled to be deleted in July 2002 will not be deleted for another 32 years. Similarly, if you change the System Date to 17 August 2004, To the Trash will delete all items scheduled to be deleted before 17 August 2004.
|
9. What happens if I use To the Trash to dispose of an alias?
|
When you move an alias on to To the Trash!, it stores the file the alias points to, not the alias file itself.
For example, let's say you created an alias that pointed to your income tax file. If you drag the alias, "Income Tax File Alias" that you just created to the system trash can, the alias "Income Tax file Alias" would be moved to the system trash can, but the file it points to, "Income tax file" would remain where it was. That's because the trash can is part of the operating system and that's how the operating system handles alias files dragged on to the trash can.
However, To the Trash! is not part of the operating system - it's an application program. Applications programs don't get the same information from the operating system as the trash can does. When you drag an Alias file on to an application program, the operating system resolves the alias before passing the file name up to the application program. So if you dragged the "Income Tax File Alias" on to To the Trash!, the operating system would resolve the alias and pass the name of the file the alias points to, "Income tax file" to To the Trash!, which would then move the "Income tax file to the To the Trash! storage folder.
Its very unlikely you would drag an alias on to To the Trash! in the first place. If the alias is no longer needed, put it in the trash can, not in To the Trash!. It doesnt make sense to store it for awhile because it has no use.
This is not unique to the To the Trash! application. All applications on the Macintosh handle aliases this same way, since this is how the operating system works. If you do want to delete an alias file safely, put the alias file in the trash can.

10. Why do I get a Permission Error when To the Trash tries to store my trash ?
|
When working on a multi-user system, there is a file access issue, in that every user does not have permission to create files on every drive.
If you are trying to run store trash on the boot drive and you are not the System Administrator, you will get a Permission Error. This is because only the the System Administrator has permission to create a folder on the boot drive. If this happens, have your System Administrator create the following folder:
- Create a folder called ToTheTrash Storage in the root directory of the disk(s)
- Secure the folder with global read/write access
This will allow each user to create their own user folder within the To the Trash Storage Folder and to manage their trash. A user will not be able to access the To the Trash Storage folders of other users.
