All About Xvid on Mac

What is Xvid?

If you're finding it difficult to find information about Xvid on Mac, that's because there isn't very much out there, even on the Xvid site.

To find support for Xvid, just keep two things in mind. First, Xvid is not a video format, but rather a varient of MPEG-4. Second, an AVI is not a video format, but rather a container, most of which contain a divx, another varient of MPEG-4. So, if treat your Xvid as if it was an AVI or Divx and look for AVI or Divx support, instead of Xvid, you'll probably find what you're looking for. Of course, both AVI and Divx are widely supported on both Mac and Windows computers, and some DVD players can play divx and Xvid files which have been burned to DVD or CD.

Like all video, Xvid requires a component before it can be played or converted on your Mac.

How to Play Xvid on Mac

Although all computers should be able to play an Xvid with player software, you may need to install a playback component if you haven't already done so. You can also play Xvid on some, but not all DVD players.

There are some DVD Players that will play Xvid files. To play, just burn the Xvid files to a CD or DVD and play. If this doesn't work in your player, convert the Xvid files to a format your DVD player will play, DVD or VCD.
